Today we decided to explore the more local towns to the west of Rapallo, leaving the 5 towns on the Cinque Terre for a train/ferry ride tomorrow.
First was a bus trip along the waterfront to Santa Margarita, another seaside/port village. Although the beaches here were considerably less cramped than the French ones, it was still difficult to find a free space on them. The sand has now become a mixture of rocks, along with gravel and grey dirt. The result is that you feet fell covered i greyish white dust – not really a nice feeling to have. But apart from that the scenery was lovely.

After lunch we walked 5km along the coast road to Portofino. The walk had been recommended to us by the lady running the campground as well as the one in the information centre. Both also told us they thought the local beaches and ports were far nicer than the ones at the Cinque Terre.
The walk certainly was impressive, and we found beautiful rock beaches with crystal clear water along the way.

One of the beach towns on the way... cant remember its name |
Portofino was more upmarket than any of the other villages. It had its share of touristy shops but also had all the designer label stores. The vibe was very classy.

We had t decide whether to continue the walk over the headland to San Frutosso – apparently a great dive spot with a statue down under the water, bit like the lost city of Atlantis. Otherwise we could choose to head back, find a beach and relax. We chose option 2 and made our way back along the road to Santa Margarita. We opted for a ½ public, ½ private beach and had some cold drinks while paying only 2€50 for sunlounges – no laying in the dirt for us Yay! (It took a while to come to this decision because there is just something wrong in our mind about HAVING to pay to use the beaches).
