After Leaving Florence it was time to get back on the road, heading south towards Siena. On the way we stopped off at the medieval town of San Gimignano – a favourite from the Evans family trip in 1997 – though for some reason in my memories I had meshed San Gimignano and Siena into 1 place. This was also the place that Jess and I had laughed about for hours after finding a postcard saying “scopolla pi pi” – (look it up on Google translate).

We lunched before leaving Mulder once again outside the city walls – a medieval city is certainly no place for a Toyota Tarago. We meandered through the windy narrow streets which we had now become familiar with in medieval cities. The streets shops were filled with deli style stores selling meats, pasta and limoncello.
The other stores beside the obvious souvenir and trinket shops were Tuscan pottery – very bright and pretty patterns. We went into a small modern art gallery which Dave’s mum would have LOVED! A great mix of realism depicting male bodies through to cigarette packets.
The town well |
From here we continued our walk to the Piazza Duomo and yet further to the very top of the city to the ruins of the old fortress – where we could climb onto the top of some of the walls and take photos out over the Tuscan countryside.

We came back down into the city cente – Piazza del Cisterna focusing on the city’s well. Here we found a long line to get into the Gelateria di Piazza and wondered what all the fus was about. Turns out the owner Sergio Dondali is famous worldwide and they had won the gelato world championshos for the last 4 years! So we HAD o have a taste – 3 flavours foeach (only 2€50 – BARGIN!). Dave: Passionfruit (his fav), mango and pinapple, CassL Raspberry Rosemary (my fav), Orange cream and chocolate. BEST GELATI EVER!
NO believe it or not, this is not a nightclub, just Dave at the pumping Gelateria! |
Mmmm Gelati |

The Gelateria that all the fuss was about! |
San Gimignano was definitely a food (is gelati counted as a food group?) and sightseeing highlight! WE’ll be back – even considered how far off course we would be if we head back via here on our way north.... MMMM gelati!
