Germany's Rhine and Mosel

Having seen Mainz the previous night we followed the Rhine river to the famous German wine growing region. With beautiful vistas of steep vinecovered hillsides and as many castles as you could ever want.
The first stop was the tiny town of Bacharach. At first glance we couldn’t work out where everyone had gone, literally feeling we had run into a ghost town with not a drop of the fampus wine able to be tasted. We waited until 2pm thinking maybe we had been caught in a siesta situation again. 2pm came and went with no action apparent and we decided to move on a little disappointed and a lot thirsty....

It was only then we discovered that we weren’t in Bacharach proper, we weren’t to be disappointed afterall and could enjoy a glass of the regions rose and Riesling.
Mulder in the real Bacharach

More vineyards!

Hmmm which wine should I choose?

Feeling satisfied we continued further up the Rhine to the village of St Goar on the left riverbank and found a campsite right on the river with an excellent view of the lovely cliffs on the other side of the river. Unfortunately we had further to travel before we could make camp and so on we went.
Terrible view at the St Goar campground

Yet another castle

Dave decides to leave me and row off down the Rhine

...and later sleeping off a wine hangover
Further up the river still we reached the almost rude shock of arriving back on the autostrada and the city of Koblenz. Originally we had planned to stay the night here but a waited in Mainz recommended following the Mosel river west from Koblenz through another famous wine region to the town of Trier. Trier being the oldest city in Germany.
So off along the mosel we went. The scenery was similar to the Rhine, agreeing with the sayings that locals are born with one leg shorter than the other so that they can easily work the vines on the steep slopes!
And another castle

Everything appeared to be in order until we realised Jim in her wisdom was for some reason taking us back to Bacharach! By the time we realised we were nearly back where we had started and 164km away from Trier! All that could be done was to turn around and drive the 164km – frustrating!
Getting lost of course had nothing to do with the fact that I am actually asleep in this photo... Hey at least i kept a hold of Jim. Women are great multitaskers!
We eventually arrived in Trier in camping Treviris a neat campground on the river at the rowing club.
